In a unique tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary, inmates of Nagpur Central Jail have constructed an eco-friendly replica of Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of the Maratha warrior king. The initiative forms part of the Maharashtra Prison Department’s reformative approach aimed at encouraging creativity and positive engagement among prisoners.
The model of Shivneri Fort was developed using environmentally sustainable materials available within the prison premises. Convicted inmates prepared the structure with the help of printed references and their own artistic vision. The project was undertaken under the guidance of senior officials from the Prisons and Correctional Services Department, Maharashtra State.
Honouring the Architect of Hindavi Swarajya
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort, laid the foundation of Hindavi Swarajya by capturing and building more than 350 forts across the region. These forts functioned as strategic defence centres, administrative headquarters and symbols of Maratha strength. Shivneri Fort, in particular, holds immense historical significance as the birthplace of the revered ruler and remains a proud emblem of Maharashtra’s rich legacy.
Prison authorities stated that the replica was created to express gratitude and respect towards Shivaji Maharaj while providing inmates with an opportunity to showcase their artistic skills.
Earlier Accolade for Raigad Fort Model
In a previous initiative, inmates of the jail had participated in the “Shivvaibhav Fort Competition” organised in Nagpur, where they presented a model of Raigad Fort from the Shivaji era. The entry secured third place at the city level and earned a trophy, certificate of appreciation and a cash prize of ₹21,000. The award was presented by Union Minister and Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari.
Cultural Programmes and Competitions
As part of the Shivaji Jayanti celebrations, a lecture highlighting the life and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was organised for inmates by a senior technical officer from the Police Telecommunications and Information Technology Department, Nagpur. Cultural performances, including Shivgeet and traditional Powada renditions, were also arranged inside the prison premises.
Furthermore, various competitions such as painting, essay writing and rangoli have been organised for children and women residing in the prison staff quarters. A cultural awareness programme centred on Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals and contribution to history is also being conducted.
The Shivneri Fort replica was prepared with the support of representatives from Shri Shivpratishthan Hindustan, Nagpur, along with active participation from inmates. Senior prison officials extended guidance and cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the initiative.
