The administration of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has proposed a 10 per cent increase in property tax, a move that could impose an additional financial burden on citizens if approved by the general body. The municipal commissioner has given in-principle approval to the proposal, which will now be placed before the House through the standing committee for final clearance. The decision has put newly elected office-bearers in a difficult position.Traditionally, the taxation department forwards a proposal for a tax revision to the commissioner every February. However, no increase was implemented during the last four years under the administrative regime. Following the recent municipal elections, governance has been handed back to elected representatives, bringing the long-pending issue of a tax hike back into focus. As per the proposal, the general tax component will be raised by 10 per cent. In addition, supplementary levies such as fire tax, tree cess, education cess, streetlight tax and water tax are proposed to be doubled from 1 per cent to 2 per cent. Citing mounting expenditure, rising infrastructure costs and a growing revenue deficit, the administration has indicated that a tax revision has become unavoidable.
