In a bid to ensure peaceful and orderly Holi celebrations, Zone 3 Police in Nagpur have launched a major preventive drive targeting known troublemakers across the city. Acting under Section 163(2) of the Maharashtra Police Act, authorities have initiated action against 280 identified criminals ahead of the festival.
The operation, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane, aims to prevent any disruption during the festive period. Holi, which typically involves large gatherings, late-night festivities and street celebrations, has in the past seen incidents of clashes, harassment, gambling and disorderly conduct. To avoid such disturbances, police have focused on repeat offenders, history-sheeters and individuals with a track record of disturbing public order.
As part of the preventive measures, several identified anti-social elements have been served externment notices and instructed to stay outside city limits from March 1 to March 4, 2026 — the peak Holi period. Others have been placed under close surveillance, with restrictions imposed on their movement and activities. The action covers several police station jurisdictions, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Pachpaoli and Shantinagar.
Officials said the 280 individuals were shortlisted following a thorough review of criminal records and intelligence inputs suggesting their potential involvement in creating disturbances.DCP Madane said the objective is deterrence. “Our priority is to ensure that citizens can celebrate Holi without fear. Preventing group clashes, hooliganism and unlawful activities remains our top concern,” he stated.Security arrangements have also been intensified in sensitive and crowded areas, with increased police deployment, round-the-clock patrolling and special squads on alert.
Police have urged residents to celebrate responsibly and report any suspicious or unlawful activity immediately. With advance preventive action and reinforced security measures in place, city police expressed confidence in ensuring a safe, peaceful and incident-free Holi across Nagpur.
