A serious design flaw in Nagpur’s Sadar flyover project has sparked fresh concerns, with experts warning that the proposed redesign could worsen traffic congestion instead of solving it. The flyover, meant to ease pressure on one of the city’s busiest corridors, had earlier forced closure of a section of the national highway due to faulty planning.
Following the controversy, Union minister Nitin Gadkari reportedly directed authorities to correct the design and prepare a revised plan. However, the new proposal has triggered another round of criticism, with experts cautioning that the landing of the flyover near RBI Chowk could choke traffic between RBI Square and the Old Morris College junction — an already congested stretch.
The revised plan proposes that the flyover start near Liberty Talkies and descend after crossing RBI Chowk. Officials claim the move could reduce congestion around Kasturchand Park and nearby intersections, but traffic specialists argue the landing point could instead push thousands of vehicles into an already crowded corridor.
The project, controversial since its launch in 2020, has once again exposed deeper planning failures in Nagpur’s urban infrastructure, raising questions about how a project designed to fix traffic chaos could end up creating another bottleneck in the heart of the city.
