A major controversy has erupted in Nagpur after contract electricity workers alleged that a company linked to MLA has not paid wages for the last two months to workers maintaining power substations under the state utility Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran). The workers claim they were left without salaries even during the Holi festival, triggering anger among employees who have now warned of a work stoppage.
According to the Maharashtra State Electricity Workers Federation, the maintenance contract for around 329 power substations across Vidarbha, including the Savner division in Nagpur rural, is held by Krystal Company. Union leaders allege that the firm has withheld wages of contract electricity workers for two months. Federation president Mohan Sharma has further alleged that the company is linked to MLA and that members of his family are among its directors.
The unpaid workers carry out high-risk maintenance and repair work at substations day and night, yet have reportedly received no salary for the past two months. Union leaders say many families are now struggling financially, and the situation became particularly tense when workers found no payment credited to their accounts even during the festival period.
The union had earlier met Mahavitaran’s senior officials, who assured that pending wages would be cleared within seven days. However, the payments have still not been released, prompting workers to issue a direct warning of a strike.
If the workers stop work, unions say the power distribution network across Nagpur district and parts of Vidarbha could face serious disruption, escalating the issue from a labour dispute into a potential electricity crisis.
