The Bombay High Court bench in Nagpur directed the Maharashtra government to reconsider the 1 km–3 km distance rule for admissions under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE).
The court said strict distance limits may defeat the purpose of the RTE Act by restricting disadvantaged children from accessing private schools. It also asked the state to submit data on neighbourhood schools and review the admission criteria.
During the hearing, the government said it had extended the distance limit from 1 km to 3 km and extended the application deadline to March 18. However, the court remarked that these limits might still prevent some children from accessing private schools through the RTE quota.
