A tragic incident caused panic and shock at Empress Mall on Sunday morning when an 18-year-old student allegedly jumped from the fourth floor after reportedly consuming poison.
Police identified the deceased as Yash Sunil Zade (18), a resident of Jawahar Nagar in Manewada and a Class 12 student.
According to officials from Ganeshpeth Police Station, the incident occurred around 9 am. Security personnel and visitors were left stunned when Yash was found lying on the second-floor area inside the mall premises following the fall. The police were immediately informed.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Yash had been missing from his home since Saturday afternoon. His family had filed a missing person complaint at Hudkeshwar Police Station after he failed to return home that night.
Police said Yash’s Class 12 examinations had concluded on March 11. However, he had reportedly been leaving home daily telling family members that he still had exams. On Saturday at around 2 pm, he again left the house saying he was going to play but did not return.
His body was discovered inside the mall premises on Sunday morning. After receiving the alert, a team from Ganeshpeth Police Station, along with forensic experts, reached the spot and carried out a detailed inspection.
During the examination of the area, officials recovered a water bottle and a bottle containing rat poison nearby, suggesting that the youth may have consumed poison before jumping from the fourth floor, police said.
The body was later sent to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, also known as Mayo Hospital, for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation.
According to preliminary information, stress is suspected to be one of the possible factors behind the extreme step, though no suicide note has been recovered so far. Officials added that all angles, including the possibility of foul play, are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
