The Senate of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has approved a proposal to grant grace marks to students who represent the university in sports.
The proposal was introduced by senior Senate member Adv. Manmohan Bajpayee, who argued that student athletes should receive grace marks if they struggle to pass their university examinations due to participation in sports events.
He explained that the decision aims to encourage sports and support sportspersons in the university. According to him, students representing the university in sports often face difficulties balancing competitions and academic schedules. Therefore, sports activities should not negatively affect their education. Providing grace marks will help these students continue both academics and sports without disadvantage.
The Senate has approved the proposal, and an amendment will be made in the university ordinance, which will then be presented before the Board of Examinations (BoE) for further approval.
Existing Incentive Marks
The university had already introduced incentive marks for sports players earlier when Dr. Dhananjay Welukar was the Director of the Postgraduate Department of Physical Education and Recreation.
Under this system:
- Students participating in inter-collegiate tournaments receive 10 marks.
- Students who secure first, second, or third place receive 15 marks.
- Students representing the university at the national level receive 25 marks.
With the new proposal, student athletes who risk failing exams due to sports commitments will benefit from additional grace marks.
Many university players miss examinations because of competitions, even though they perform well in both academics and sports. Often, due to administrative delays at the college level, these students also face procedural difficulties.
The new policy is expected to support student athletes and ensure their sports participation does not harm their academic progress.
