Nearly 33 companies allotted land under the Multi-modal International Hub Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project have not commenced operations, prompting the Development Commissionerate to consider action against non-performing firms.
A review conducted in November 2025 revealed that 24 companies in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and nine in the Non-SEZ area had acquired plots but are yet to begin development activities. Officials indicated that a meeting is likely to be convened soon, where these firms may be directed to either start work immediately or surrender the allotted land.
Data shows that within the SEZ, out of 98 companies, 31 are currently operational, while four have initiated construction. Additionally, 22 new firms have recently been allotted plots, six have withdrawn their agreements, and one company has halted construction work. Five companies are in the process of finalising agreements.
At the Central Facility Centre, all 32 companies are fully operational.
In the Non-SEZ area, 58 companies have been allotted land. Of these, 28 are operational, while construction work of four companies is nearing completion. Eleven new firms have recently received land allotments, and four have cancelled their agreements. Meanwhile, nine companies have not yet begun work, three have stalled construction, and five are completing formalities to sign agreements.
The newly allotted firms are engaged in sectors such as lithium-ion battery manufacturing, aircraft component production, prototype and model manufacturing for consumer durables and automobiles, along with IT and trading services.
Dr. Vipin Itankar, Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director of Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), stated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to speed up development in MIHAN. He added that efforts are underway to improve infrastructure for existing companies, while several new firms have expressed interest in investing and starting operations in the project.
