In recent weeks, a surge in cyber scams targeting vehicle drivers and owners has raised alarms. Fake websites and fraudulent mobile apps are tricking many into compromising their personal information and finances.
The Transport Department is urging all citizens to stick to official government sites for services like driving licenses and vehicle registration. The official portals include VAHAN at vahan.parivahan.gov.in, SARATHI for driving licenses at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, and the e-challan service at echallan.parivahan.gov.in.
But it’s not just about which site you visit. Scammers are sending misleading messages via SMS or WhatsApp claiming that fines are pending or that driving licenses will be suspended unless immediate payment occurs through unauthorized links. “The RTO office doesn’t send payment links through messaging apps,” a department representative emphasized.
Citizens need to steer clear of suspicious APK downloads as well, including apps like “RTO Servoces.apk” or “eChallan_Pay.apk.” These can lead to theft of sensitive data such as banking details and OTPs, putting individuals at significant risk.
If you receive any questionable messages, report them right away. You can file complaints through the National Cyber Crime Portal at cybercrime.gov.in, call the Cyber Fraud Helpline at 1930, or visit your local District Cyber Police Station.
The message is clear: stay alert and always verify information through official channels.
