The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday suggested to the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court that space inside Yashwant Stadium and vacant land near the Ghatate building be used for ‘Pay and Park’ facilities to help ease traffic congestion.
The proposal was made during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Dhantoli Nagarik Mandal, which has raised concerns about encroachments and traffic issues in Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth.
IMA informed the court that Yashwant Stadium is currently closed and its internal space could be used for paid parking. It also suggested that the open land near the Ghatate building at Panchsheel Square be developed as a similar parking facility.
The association added that it would not support any hospital found encroaching on designated parking areas.
Meanwhile, following earlier court directions on illegal constructions, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has issued show-cause notices to several hospitals in Dhantoli. Encroachments by hospitals have contributed to the growing parking problem in the area. However, the court noted that hospitals alone cannot be blamed and said that local residents must also share responsibility.
During the previous hearing, Justices Anil Kilor and Raj Wakode observed that citizens who fail to follow rules or cooperate with authorities may face stricter penalties.
Advocate Bhanudas Kulkarni appeared for the IMA, while Ashutosh Dharmadhikari and Ashwin Deshpande represented the Nagarik Mandal. Gemini Kasat appeared for the Municipal Corporation.
