Nagpur: Maharashtra is moving rapidly towards tech-driven policing as the Nagpur Rural Police’s AI-based pilot project has shown promising results, helping investigators solve 287 cases so far. Backed by this success, the state Home Department has sanctioned nearly ₹2 crore to further strengthen the ‘MahaCrimeOS’ platform and expand its use across Maharashtra.
The pilot project, the first of its kind in the state, leverages Artificial Intelligence to assist police in handling complex cases such as cybercrime, financial fraud, narcotics offences, and sexual crimes. These cases often require detailed analysis and procedural precision, making AI a valuable support tool for investigators.
‘MahaCrimeOS’ is built on Microsoft’s ‘CrimeOS’ AI system and has been customised for Maharashtra by the state organisation MARVEL. The platform has been adapted to work in Marathi and incorporates Maharashtra Police’s standard investigation procedures along with key judicial guidelines from the Bombay High Court.
The system provides step-by-step guidance to officers once an FIR is registered, ensuring that investigations follow proper legal protocols. It also simplifies paperwork by generating official documents through an in-built AI copilot, making the process faster and more organised.
A total of 133 officers from Nagpur Rural Police have been trained to use the system. The initiative has already earned accolades under the Chief Minister’s 100-day and 150-day e-governance programmes.
The newly approved funds will be used to procure the AI system and enhance it further by integrating a legal database, making it more robust and effective for field use.
According to Superintendent of Police Harssh Poddar, who is also the CEO of MARVEL, the platform has proven highly effective in real-world cases. In one instance, police tracked down a cyber fraud accused in Kolkata, while in another case, they successfully recovered nearly ₹5 lakh lost by a retired individual.
With its early success in Nagpur Rural, the Maharashtra government is now planning a phased rollout of the AI-based investigation system across the state, signalling a major shift towards automated and intelligent policing.
