What was showcased as a big-ticket infrastructure push with a Prime Ministerial virtual bhoomipujan has now turned into a glaring symbol of delay and dysfunction. Over a year after the ceremony, the Nagpur airport expansion project remains completely stalled — with not a single brick laid on the ground.
The ambitious plan to modernise Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport and hand it over to the GMR Group is stuck in bureaucratic limbo, waiting for Union Cabinet approval and land transfer clearances. Despite legal victories and repeated assurances, the project hasn’t moved beyond paperwork, leaving the selected developer in a “wait and watch” mode.
The irony is stark — a project meant to transform Nagpur into a major aviation and cargo hub under the MIHAN vision is now trapped in red tape. Investors and industry bodies have already flagged the delay as a major setback to Vidarbha’s growth ambitions.
Even as leaders made tall promises during the bhoomipujan, the airport continues to struggle with limited connectivity and outdated infrastructure.
With files gathering dust and approvals dragging endlessly, the question is unavoidable: was the bhoomipujan a launch — or just another headline without delivery?
