To recover pending electricity dues, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has intensified its crackdown on non-paying consumers across the Nagpur circle, disconnecting more than 21,000 power connections within just over two weeks of launching a special drive.
The campaign, which began on March 1, picked up pace with strict action against consumers who failed to clear their bills despite repeated notices. As of March 16, power supply to 21,308 consumers had been disconnected, reflecting the utility’s firm stance on non-payment.
The Nagpur circle, covering Nagpur and Wardha districts, has around 19.46 lakh low-tension (LT) consumers. Officials said the action mainly targeted habitual non-payers who ignored multiple reminders.
To speed up recovery, senior officials have taken direct charge of field operations. Chief engineer Dilip Dodke and superintending engineer Amit Paranjape recently conducted an on-ground inspection in the Kamal Chowk area under the Lashkaribagh subdivision of the Civil Lines division, directing teams to intensify recovery efforts, especially from commercial and industrial users.
The strict measures appear to be yielding results. According to MSEDCL officials, 13,644 consumers have cleared their dues after receiving disconnection notices and have since had their electricity supply restored.
Authorities have urged consumers to take the drive seriously, warning that disconnection not only causes inconvenience but also increases the financial burden. Once supply is cut, consumers must pay the outstanding amount along with late payment charges, interest and reconnection fees, significantly raising the total payable amount.
With summer approaching, officials cautioned that power cuts could lead to discomfort and economic losses. They also noted that with the financial year-end nearing and consecutive bank holidays ahead, last-minute payments may face delays due to heavy rush or technical issues.
MSEDCL has appealed to consumers to avoid waiting until the deadline and instead clear their dues promptly through its official mobile app or authorised payment centres to prevent disconnection.
