In a significant move aimed at strengthening public safety, Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik has announced in the State Assembly that the height of the compound wall at Gorewada Zoo will be increased as per requirements. The announcement comes following persistent follow-up on the issue, which has been a matter of serious concern for residents of West Nagpur. The Minister also directed officials to immediately implement effective and long-term measures to prevent leopard intrusions in Dhabha and adjoining areas.
The issue has gained urgency due to repeated sightings of leopards in residential pockets, posing a threat to citizens. Continuous efforts were made at various levels to highlight the gravity of the situation and push for concrete action. As part of immediate preventive measures, steps such as clearing bushes and dense vegetation from open plots, installing high-mast and street lighting, and ensuring regular patrolling by forest department personnel have already been initiated in vulnerable areas.
During the Assembly session, the matter of a recent leopard incident in Pardi (East Nagpur) was also strongly raised, along with reports of leopard movement near the airport vicinity. The government’s response is being seen as a crucial step toward addressing the growing human-wildlife conflict in urban fringe areas of Nagpur and ensuring the safety of residents.
