In a bid to ease the difficulties faced by passengers at one of Vidarbha’s busiest railway hubs, the Nagpur division of Central Railway has urged authorities to fast-track the opening of a dedicated parking zone for radio taxis and app-based cab services at Nagpur railway station.
For years, the station has grappled with chaotic cab arrangements. In the absence of a designated pick-up point, app-based cabs and radio taxis often halt at random spots outside the premises. This forces passengers—including patients, senior citizens, families with children, and persons with disabilities—to walk long distances with heavy luggage, leading to inconvenience, safety concerns, and traffic congestion on approach roads.
Earlier attempts to streamline cab services ran into hurdles such as resistance from prepaid auto-rickshaw operators, interference from illegal auto drivers, and limited participation from major app-based platforms. These issues frequently resulted in disruptions and failed contracts.
To resolve the problem, railway authorities have now awarded a fresh contract to an IT firm to establish a dedicated cab parking and pick-up facility within the station premises. The designated area, located near the Dome Area, will accommodate five cabs and span 146.4 square metres.
The contract is valid for three years—from January 3 this year to January 2, 2029—and aims to ensure smooth last-mile connectivity for passengers. The operator has already applied for approval from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), with inspections completed and final clearance expected soon.
Railway sources said the infrastructure at the site is ready, and operations can begin immediately after approvals are granted. Authorities have urged swift action from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and RTA to enable an early launch.
“This initiative is expected to bring relief to thousands of daily passengers,” a railway official said. “Senior citizens, families with children, and persons with disabilities will particularly benefit, as they will no longer need to navigate crowded roads with heavy baggage. The dedicated zone will also help reduce congestion around the station.”
Once operational, the facility is expected to integrate with leading cab aggregators, offering seamless pick-up and drop services from within the station. While drop-offs may remain free or nominal, pick-ups could involve a small facilitation fee, similar to other stations.
With Nagpur being a key railway junction connecting Vidarbha to the rest of the country, improved last-mile connectivity is likely to enhance the overall travel experience and support the region’s growing economic and healthcare travel needs.
