The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched an aggressive drive against power bill defaulters in Nagpur and Wardha districts, resulting in disconnection of electricity supply to over 36,000 consumers since March 1. The campaign is being carried out under the Energy Department, currently headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio.
Officials stated that the move comes amid mounting unpaid dues running into crores, prompting strict enforcement measures. Consumers have been issued clear warnings to clear pending bills or face disconnection, with authorities adopting a zero-tolerance approach towards prolonged defaults.
The drive has taken a serious turn in sensitive areas where MSEDCL teams are facing resistance and potential threats. In view of safety concerns and incidents of hostility towards staff, the power utility has sought police protection to carry out disconnection operations.
Joint teams of police personnel and electricity officials have been deployed in vulnerable localities to ensure smooth execution of the campaign.
Authorities have reiterated that the recovery drive will continue without any political or social interference, focusing solely on clearing outstanding dues and restoring financial discipline within the system.
