The iconic Indian Coffee House in Sadar has begun closing early due to an LPG shortage, disrupting the long-standing routine of its regular patrons who gather there for relaxed afternoon sessions.
Staff said the outlet will now function only during morning hours, when footfall is highest, and shut by noon to conserve cooking gas. “We are facing a shortage of LPG,” waiters said, declining orders even as regulars continued to turn up for conversations.
The over five-decade-old coffee house, a popular meeting spot for intellectuals, professionals and loyal customers, usually operates from early morning until after 8pm. Regular groups are known to visit at fixed hours.
Sources in the management said the kitchen typically requires around three cylinders a day, but supply has dropped sharply. “We now get only two cylinders at a time, twice a week, whereas earlier supplies came four times a week,” a source said.
“It was manageable until about a week ago, but with reserve stock now exhausted, we have no choice but to shut early,” a staff member added.
Regulars have expressed concern over the reduced hours. “We come here several times a day, sometimes just to meet friends or for client meetings. It’s unfortunate if the place has to shut early due to the gas shortage,” said P G Philip, a real estate agent and a regular visitor.
