In a forward-looking initiative to tackle the city’s intense summer heat, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched an innovative design competition titled “Innovate for Nagpur City!”. The competition aims to develop ‘Solar Rooftop Shade’ structures at busy traffic intersections, offering relief to motorists waiting at signals while simultaneously promoting renewable energy generation.
The civic body has invited participation from engineering students, professionals, designers, and consultants to submit creative and practical design solutions. The top three entries will be awarded cash prizes of Rs25,000, Rs21,000, and Rs17,000 respectively. The initiative also seeks to engage citizens in shaping urban infrastructure through innovative and sustainable ideas.
The concept of installing solar rooftop shades was proposed by Mayor Nita Thackeray and Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani Vakhare during a high-level meeting. Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibedh, Ruling Party Leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin, and Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant were also present. The project is being implemented by the NMC Traffic Department.
Apart from providing shade and comfort to commuters, the solar installations will generate clean energy, contributing to environmental sustainability. The structures will also offer space for advertisement signage, creating an additional revenue stream while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of city intersections.
The application window for the competition is open from April 6 to April 20, 2026. Shortlisted participants will present their designs on April 24 at the NMC headquarters. Entries can be submitted via email at [email protected], and further details are available on the official website www.nmcnagpur.gov.in.
Adding a unique touch to the initiative, winners will also get an opportunity to interact directly with the Mayor during a special “Coffee with Mayor” session, where they can discuss their ideas and vision for a smarter, greener Nagpur.
Appealing for wide participation, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani Vakhare urged citizens and professionals to contribute innovative ideas to help transform Nagpur into a sustainable and citizen-friendly city.
