Contractors working under the Public Works Department (PWD) in Nagpur Circle are set to launch a “stop work” agitation from Tuesday, protesting against mounting unpaid bills. The pending dues in the region have surged to around ₹1,898 crore, raising concerns that key development works like roads and bridges may come to a standstill.
According to the Maharashtra Contractors’ Federation, unpaid bills across the state have reached nearly ₹96,000 crore. In Nagpur Circle alone, total dues stood at ₹2,364 crore as of March 31, of which only about ₹465 crore has been cleared so far.Nagpur Contractors Association President Subodh Sarode called the situation a “cruel joke” on contractors, pointing out that payments for work completed during the 2024 Winter Session are still pending.
He added that contractors had earlier boycotted 2025 Winter Session works over delayed payments, but resumed after assurances from authorities. However, only about 20% of the dues have been paid to date.Sarode, along with Maharashtra Contractors’ Federation Working President Sanjay Maind, said a memorandum will be submitted to the Chief Minister at Hyderabad House on Tuesday at 4 pm.
The memorandum will formally announce the agitation and demand immediate clearance of all outstanding payments.
