The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to initiate criminal proceedings against three private bus operators over missing chassis parts and equipment from city buses operated under the “Aapli Bus” service. The decision was taken unanimously in a Transport Committee meeting held on Wednesday.
According to officials, the issue surfaced during the scrapping process of buses that had completed 15 years of service under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). A total of 123 buses were decommissioned, and subsequent inspections revealed that key components, including chassis and onboard equipment, were missing.
The NMC had issued notices to the concerned operators seeking explanations, but no responses were received. Following this, the civic body resolved to lodge police complaints and recover a total amount of Rs32.39 lakh from the three operators. Authorities have also warned that if the dues are not paid within the stipulated time, the amount will be adjusted against pending payments to the companies.
In a parallel decision, the committee also approved the deployment of 87 private security guards across seven bus depots and two administrative locations to ensure the safety of buses and related assets. The guards will be deployed in shifts to provide round-the-clock security.
