The Maharashtra State Education Institutions Federation has raised objections to the ‘show cause’ notices being issued by the District Collector’s office to teachers from private aided and unaided schools. These notices have been served for assigning non-academic duties such as Booth Level Officer (BLO) work and for initiating administrative action if such duties are not performed. The federation has submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, Nagpur, demanding that these notices be withdrawn.
Reports of such notices being issued to teachers and staff of aided and unaided private schools have appeared in newspapers.
However, as per the orders of the Mumbai High Court, the administration does not have the authority to assign non-academic duties to employees of private schools in this manner. In petition numbers 1841/2009, 5736/2015, and 4290/2015, the High Court has clearly stated that such duties cannot be imposed on employees against their will, nor can administrative action be taken against them for non-compliance.
Despite these directives, such notices are reportedly being issued, stated Ravindra Fadnavis, General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Education Institutions Federation, in the memorandum. The federation has demanded that all administrative or criminal actions initiated against teachers and staff of private schools be immediately withdrawn and the issued notices be cancelled.
