In a major step towards modern urban infrastructure, piped natural gas (PNG) has been supplied to households in Nagpur for the first time, with the rollout beginning from the Butibori area. Residents of Sisko Colony witnessed the inaugural usage, where over 100 households started cooking using PNG on the very first day.
According to officials, the initiative is being implemented by the authorized gas distribution company, aiming to provide a safer, more economical, and continuous fuel supply. So far, more than 1,000 consumers have registered for PNG connections, while pipeline connectivity work for around 250 homes had already been completed prior to the launch.
The company has stated that within the next 2–3 months, the supply will expand to other areas including Jamtha and MIHAN. Subsequently, localities such as Chinchbhavan and nearby regions will also be covered, ensuring a phased city-wide rollout of piped gas infrastructure.
Experts highlight that PNG is nearly 20% cheaper than LPG and is considered safer, as it is lighter than air, reducing the risk of accumulation in case of leakage. Additionally, households will benefit from uninterrupted 24-hour gas supply, eliminating the need for cylinder refills.
Apart from domestic users, industries in Butibori are also receiving gas through the same network. The company plans to connect more industrial units in the coming months, further strengthening the region’s energy infrastructure.
Officials informed that approximately 25–30 kilometers of gas pipeline has already been laid in Butibori and surrounding areas, with expansion work progressing steadily across Nagpur.
