Amid the citywide celebrations, a significant international recognition came to light: the American organisation the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy has announced it will institute the ‘Global Preeminence Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Award’ in 2027.
This is the first time an American institution has established an award in Dr. Ambedkar’s name, and it is widely being seen as a historic acknowledgement of his philosophy on the global stage. Dr. Ambedkar, who passed away on December 6, 1956, had declared — “Jab tak suraj chand rahega, Baba tera naam rahega” — a sentiment his followers have kept alive through generations of social and cultural activism. His 134th birth anniversary saw mobile phones, laptops and television screens across Maharashtra fill with songs celebrating his thoughts and legacy.
The announcement of the 2027 award is being hailed as proof that Ambedkar’s ideas on democracy, equality and social justice have transcended national boundaries to find resonance on a global platform.
