The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has rejected allegations that sewage water is entering Gorewada Lake and being supplied to residents through the city’s water distribution system. Terming the claims “scientifically incorrect,” civic officials said there is no evidence to support such assertions.
A team comprising Water Supply Committee Chairperson Divya Dhurde, Vice-Chairperson Vijay (Pintu) Jhalke, Superintending Engineer Shweta Banerjee, and Executive Engineer Shrikant Waikar conducted a joint inspection of Gorewada Lake and the Pench water treatment facilities.
Officials stated that key water quality indicators — including low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), absence of ammonia, and the presence of a healthy aquatic ecosystem — clearly show there is no sewage contamination. They added that the water quality is well within prescribed standards.During the visit, Dhurde clarified that Gorewada Lake is not currently being used as a primary water source and serves only as an emergency backup.
Visual inspection also indicated clear water, in line with earlier test findings.Fresh water samples were collected in the presence of committee members and sent for detailed physico-chemical analysis to further validate the results.
