Vidarbha is expected to experience a below-normal southwest monsoon this year, in line with the overall national trend. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), only parts of south Gadchiroli are likely to receive normal rainfall, officials said on Wednesday.
The region typically records an average of 937 mm of rainfall during the four-month monsoon season, compared to the national average of 87 cm. However, this year, Vidarbha is projected to receive only about 92% to 94% of its average rainfall. The subdued monsoon is attributed to prevailing El Niño conditions, which are known to weaken rainfall across the country.
At the same time, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) currently remains neutral, with climate models suggesting it may turn positive towards the latter part of the season.“Due to neutral IOD conditions, rainfall is expected to remain weak during June, July, and August.
However, if the IOD turns positive, improved rainfall can be expected in September,” said Pravin Kumar, Scientist C at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, in a statement.
