Researchers from the Post Graduate Department of Zoology at Nagpur University have developed an innovative device that can detect diabetes through breath, eliminating the need for conventional needle-based blood tests. The research team has received a UK Design Registration Certificate for their “Non-Invasive Diabetes Monitoring Device”.
The device functions by measuring acetone levels in a person’s breath, which tend to rise with increasing blood glucose levels. Using correlation and regression analysis, the researchers established a predictive link between breath acetone and blood glucose, enabling the device to estimate glucose levels from breath readings. The project was led by Dr Varsha Dhurve (Head of Department), along with Harsh Tiwari and Sabrin Bano Mohd Javed Mansuri.
The research also involved collaboration with several institutions, including Government JSTPG College, Balaghat; Shivaji Science Colleges in Nagpur and Amravati; Kamla Nehru Mahila College, Balaghat; and Trinity College, Dublin.
