he Maharashtra government has introduced new rules for Class 1 admissions, making age the key eligibility factor from the 2026–27 academic year.
Under the revised guidelines, only children who complete six years of age by December 31, 2026, will be eligible for admission to Class 1. The School Education Department has made it clear that there will be no relaxation in this rule.
Age Criteria Tightened Across All Schools
The updated rule will apply uniformly to all government, aided, and private schools across Maharashtra. Authorities have directed institutions to strictly follow the new age requirement without exceptions.
Earlier, the cut-off date for determining age eligibility was March 31. The shift to a December 31 deadline is aimed at creating a more structured and uniform admission process across the state.
Aligned With National Education Policy
Officials said the decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recommends that children begin formal schooling at the age of six after completing pre-primary education.
Experts believe that starting school at the right age supports better mental and intellectual development and allows children to fully experience early childhood learning.
Birth Certificate Mandatory For Admission
As per the new rules, a child’s birth certificate will be the only valid proof of age during the admission process.
Primary education in the state typically covers Classes 1 to 8 for children aged between 6 and 14 years.
What It Means For Parents
The change means parents will now need to plan school admissions strictly based on their child’s age rather than early enrollment preferences.
The government’s move is seen as a step towards ensuring age-appropriate learning, uniformity in admissions, and better academic readiness among students.
