After months of delays and legal hurdles, work on the makeover of Futala Lake has picked up pace, though the final completion timeline remains uncertain. At the lakefront, activity has intensified as the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation moves ahead with restoration and new installations to transform the site into a major attraction.
Officials said removal of old and damaged fountain cables has begun, a key step in reviving the project, with nearly 80% of the new cable infrastructure already procured. The earlier fountain system had stopped functioning due to severe pollution-related damage.
However, progress is now being affected by the delayed arrival of a specialised team from France, crucial for installing advanced lighting and projection systems. Travel disruptions linked to the ongoing Gulf conflict have held up their visit. Officials said the team is expected to arrive via an alternative route soon.
Artificial Banyan Tree Near Completion
Work on an artificial banyan tree, one of the project’s key visual attractions, is progressing quickly. Its outer structure is almost complete, with the 3D formation likely to be ready in the coming days. A LIDAR survey will then be conducted to digitally map the structure, followed by integration into a projection system—again requiring the expertise of the French team.
Floating Stage Almost Ready
A floating stage, planned as a venue for cultural events, is also nearing completion. Despite visible progress across multiple components, authorities are avoiding committing to a deadline due to reliance on international experts.
The project has faced multiple setbacks. In January 2024, the Supreme Court of India ordered a status quo, halting the work. Activities resumed only in October 2025, forcing several aspects of the project to restart from scratch.
