The long-pending proposal to install green shade nets at major road junctions under the Heat Action Plan has finally been approved by the Standing Committee on Tuesday, offering some relief to commuters amid rising heat.
Officials said the delay was caused by the late submission of the proposal by the administration. The project, which usually begins in early April, will now cover 18 to 20 key intersections in Nagpur, with completion targeted by the end of the month. The city is already witnessing temperatures touching around 44°C.
After the meeting, Standing Committee chairperson Shivani Dani Wakhre acknowledged the delay. To avoid further setbacks, she said no new tenders will be floated. Instead, last year’s lowest bidders (L-1 contractors) will be given the work at the same rates, without any cost escalation.Though the ₹65 lakh proposal had received approval from the Municipal Commissioner on March 30, it took nearly 20 days to reach the committee. Authorities have now been directed to complete installations by April 30, with the possibility of adding more locations if required.
The initiative aims to provide shade to motorists waiting at traffic signals, though the delay has raised concerns over administrative preparedness. The committee also cleared several other infrastructure and administrative proposals.
Fire Services Proposal ApprovedThe committee also approved a proposal to extend the services of 53 contractual firemen for six months, subject to the outcome of an ongoing regularisation case in the High Court.
