In what is likely a first since Maharashtra’s formation in 1960, this year’s Maharashtra Day celebrations in Nagpur will not be held at the iconic Kasturchand Park. Instead, the event will take place at the Divisional Commissionerate, with authorities cancelling the traditional grand parade due to the intense heatwave.
Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari confirmed that the programme will be conducted in a scaled-down format, retaining key ceremonial elements but without the parade.
“There will be manvandana, a guard of honour and the ceremonial salami, but no parade this year due to the extreme heat in the region,” she said.
Officials cited repeated instances in recent years where participants, particularly students and elderly attendees, have fainted or fallen ill due to prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
The concern is especially significant for decorated army and police veterans, many of whom are over 80 and often remain standing throughout the event, including during performances and formal segments.
“Alongside the veterans, even police personnel participating in parade and students performing cultural activities have to endure the harsh sun,” a senior official said, adding that the decision was taken after careful consideration of ground realities.
The Nagpur administration had formally approached the General Administration Department and the protocol office at Mantralaya, seeking approval to change the venue and format. The proposal was approved, allowing the event to be shifted to a more controlled environment.
While the core ceremonial aspects will remain intact, the absence of the parade marks a significant departure from tradition. The Maharashtra Day event at Kasturchand Park has historically drawn large crowds and featured elaborate marches, student performances, and public participation.
