The much-awaited “missing link” stretch on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway will open on May 1, Maharashtra Day. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to inaugurate the project, marking a major improvement to one of India’s busiest routes.
The 13.3-km stretch connects Khopoli on the Mumbai side to Kusgaon near Lonavala. It is designed to bypass the old Khandala ghat section, which is known for sharp turns, heavy traffic, and safety concerns.
The new route is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by at least 30 minutes, with even greater savings during peak hours. A key feature of the project is a 650-metre cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley, rising more than 180 metres, making it one of the tallest road bridges in India.
Only light vehicles and buses will be allowed on this stretch, while heavy vehicles will continue using the old ghat road due to safety reasons. There will be no increase in toll charges at the Khalapur toll plaza.
Built under challenging conditions like heavy rain and strong winds, the new route is also expected to improve access to popular tourist spots such as Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort, and Karla Caves.
