In a major technological boost to criminal investigations, Nagpur Police will soon be equipped with an advanced mobile forensic van featuring cutting-edge tools for rapid narcotics detection and 3D digital crime scene reconstruction.
The state-of-the-art van, provided by the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (DFSL), includes FTIR-based technology to help police identify suspected narcotic substances at the spot itself, enabling quicker action in drug-related offences. At present, such samples are sent to forensic laboratories for confirmation, often delaying investigation. The new system is expected to significantly improve response time and evidence handling.
Another key feature of the van is its advanced 360-degree crime scene scanning system, capable of generating precise three-dimensional digital models of incident locations. The technology can capture exact measurements, object placement and scene details, while preserving evidence through secure digital records backed by blockchain technology, reducing the possibility of tampering and strengthening evidentiary value in court.
Officials said the van has already reached Nagpur and training of personnel is underway before it is deployed with city police. According to Ashwin Gedam, Deputy Director of the Regional Forensic Laboratory, the van will enhance transparency and accuracy in technical investigations. Vijay Thakare said Maharashtra continues to adopt emerging forensic technologies to strengthen criminal justice delivery.
With 259 mobile forensic vans already deployed across the state, Maharashtra is considered a frontrunner in forensic-backed policing, and the new-generation vans for Nagpur and Mumbai mark a further step in modernization. The initiative is in line with directions issued by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to strengthen scientific and digital evidence systems in investigations.
