An anonymous letter claiming that radioactive material had been planted at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters and the Reshimbagh-based Dr. Hedgewar Smruti Mandir complex has put security agencies on high alert in the city. The letter, addressed to Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, was received via post on April 27. Following the threat, a case has been registered at Sadar Police Station and multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), have launched an investigation.
According to initial information, the letter, written in English, claims responsibility in the name of an organisation called “DSS” and alleges that a radioactive substance identified as “CJM 137” has been placed at key locations including the RSS headquarters, the Smruti Mandir complex and nearby metro premises. The letter also claims that the substance is highly dangerous and could affect several people.
Commissioner Ravinder Singal confirmed the development and said that the police are investigating all aspects of the case. “We are examining where the letter came from, who wrote it and who is claiming responsibility. The motive behind it will be known only after identifying and arresting the accused,” he said. He added that both routine and advanced security checks have already been conducted at the locations mentioned in the letter.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, along with the Anti-Terrorism Squad and atomic energy experts, carried out detailed inspections of the sites. No radioactive or suspicious material has been found so far. However, as a precaution, authorities have intensified surveillance and are probing all possible angles, including the possibility of a hoax or a deliberate attempt to create panic.
Police have assured that strict vigilance is being maintained while the investigation continues.
