In a significant move aimed at promoting the use of the Marathi language, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Nagpur has decided to introduce Marathi learning sessions for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers. As part of the initiative, drivers will be taught basic Marathi, including reading and speaking skills, to improve communication with passengers and ensure better understanding of local signboards and instructions.
According to officials, a special inspection drive will begin from May 1, during which all auto and taxi drivers will be checked for basic Marathi knowledge. Those found unable to understand or speak the language may face action as per rules. However, authorities have clarified that drivers willing to learn will be supported through structured training programs in collaboration with local organizations and educational institutions. The campaign is expected to run for nearly 100 days, with a focus on helping drivers become proficient in Marathi.
Officials stated that learning the local language is essential for operating in Maharashtra, and the decision has received positive responses from transport unions. An estimated 22,000 auto drivers operate in the city, and efforts will be made to ensure maximum participation.
Authorities further emphasized that after the completion of the campaign, a review will be conducted, and further action will be decided based on compliance levels.
