As temperatures continue to soar across Nagpur, the relentless heatwave is not only disrupting daily life but also placing immense pressure on critical infrastructure. Residents are already battling extreme weather conditions, with cases of heatstroke and dehydration becoming a growing concern.
The city’s power distribution network is also feeling the impact of the intense summer. According to MahaVitaran officials, transformers across Nagpur are overheating due to excessive electricity load coupled with high ambient temperatures, increasing the risk of technical failures, explosions, and sudden power disruptions.
To tackle the situation, the electricity department has introduced a unique cooling mechanism by installing special coolers on transformers to control their temperature and prevent overheating. The measure is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply during peak summer demand and minimising the possibility of equipment breakdowns.
The move underscores the mounting challenges posed by the heatwave, as both citizens and essential infrastructure struggle to cope with the rising temperatures. Officials have warned that if the heat intensifies further in the coming days, pressure on the power system could increase significantly.
