In a major drive to reclaim public spaces, the Enforcement Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) carried out anti-encroachment operations in several parts of the city on May 7.
The action targeted illegal structures obstructing roads, footpaths and traffic movement.The biggest operation was conducted in Dharampeth Zone No. 2 near the Veterinary College Gate on DP Road in Seminary Hills. Despite strong opposition from local residents, the NMC team demolished five houses and five shops that were blocking the proposed road alignment.
Additional police force was deployed to control the situation and complete the demolition.In Gandhibagh Zone No. 6, joint teams cleared encroachments from Mahal Chowk to Badkas Chowk and Gadkari Wada. Illegal stalls and shops occupying roadsides and footpaths were removed to ease traffic congestion.
Officials also continued monitoring the stretch from Sitabuldi Main Road to Variety Square to keep pavements free from unauthorised vendors.Near VNIT and Yashwant Stadium, action was taken against hawkers operating with invalid licences and vehicles without registration numbers.
NMC officials warned that repeat violations would invite criminal action.During the operation in Ward 8 (Mominpura), Corporator Waseem Khan protested against the action, claiming it affected citizens’ shops and livelihoods. Police detained him and took him to the police station. He was later released after being issued a warning.
The operations were carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar, Deputy Commissioner Mangesh Khawale and Assistant Commissioner Sanjay Kamble.
