The City Traffic Police will soon deploy advanced drug-testing machines to detect motorists driving under the influence of narcotic substances. A special enforcement drive will be launched across the city, with a focus on people attending weekend parties and visiting pubs.
According to DCP Traffic Lohit Matani, the initiative has been introduced to prevent accidents and enhance road safety for citizens. Two police officers, along with supporting staff, have been specially assigned for the operation. They have also undergone technical training on the proper handling of the machines and operational procedures.
The drug-testing devices will enable police to identify drivers allegedly under the influence of substances such as ganja (marijuana), opium, heroin, cocaine, psychotropic drugs and other narcotics. Officials said strict legal action will be taken against violators during the checks.
The Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with the campaign and report any suspected cases of drugged driving within Nagpur city limits by dialling the emergency helpline number 112.
