Panic gripped commuters at the busy LIC Square near Kasturchand Park on Friday evening after a violent clash reportedly broke out between two groups of beggars at the traffic signal area around 5:40 PM. A local citizen who witnessed the incident said the situation quickly escalated into a dangerous street brawl involving stone pelting, physical assault, abuses, and attacks with wooden sticks, creating fear among motorists and pedestrians passing through the junction.
According to eyewitnesses, both groups were engaged in a heated argument before the fight turned violent. Large stones were allegedly hurled from both sides on the main road, forcing commuters to stop in panic. Fortunately, no passerby was injured in the stone pelting, though several persons involved in the clash reportedly sustained injuries. The witness also claimed that despite informing Sadar Police Station and requesting immediate police intervention, no police team had arrived at the spot for nearly 15 minutes after the complaint was made. Attempts to contact emergency helpline 112 also reportedly failed to connect.
The entire incident, including videos and photographs, was later shared with Ravinder Kumar Singal through WhatsApp, along with a detailed complaint demanding strict action against those involved. The complainant expressed confidence that the Police Commissioner would take serious cognizance of the matter and initiate strong action.
Raising concern over the increasing number of beggars across Nagpur city, the complainant alleged that aggressive begging at traffic signals, abusive behavior, public nuisance, intoxication, and encroachment of public spaces have become common issues troubling citizens. He urged the city police and administration to launch a strict drive to make Nagpur “beggar-free,” stating that such incidents are tarnishing the image of the city and creating law and order concerns for residents and visitors alike.
