Nagpur’s skyline now features a striking symbol of national pride, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed a massive 1,200 kg Ashoka Stambh—the National Emblem of India—atop the Ashok Chakra-inspired rotary at Ashok Square, turning one of the city’s busiest junctions into a landmark infrastructure attraction.
The large replica of the Ashoka Stambh has been sculpted by artisans from Nagpur. Positioned above the five-armed elevated rotary, the National Emblem featuring the four lions has been crafted using Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and lifted into place using heavy cranes. The structure is currently covered, with officials expected to formally unveil it closer to the inauguration of the flyover corridor.
Described as one of the most distinctive design elements integrated into a road infrastructure project in the region, the towering installation now serves as the centrepiece of the five-armed rotary built under the ₹998 crore Indora-Dighori Flyover Project.
Designed to resemble the Ashok Chakra from a bird’s-eye view, the rotary features 24 spoke-like steel cables radiating from a central pylon. At its core stands a 22-metre-high vertical pylon with a diameter of about one metre. The Ashoka Stambh mounted on top rises nearly 3.8 metres, with a base diameter of around 1.5 metres.
The Ashok Chakra-inspired layout had already drawn attention for its engineering and aesthetic appeal, and the addition of the National Emblem has further elevated it into a symbolic urban landmark. Situated at a key traffic junction, the rotary is part of the 4 km Kamal Square–Reshimbagh elevated corridor under the larger Indora-Dighori Flyover Project, which includes flyovers connecting Kamal Square to Reshimbagh Square and Bhande Plot Square to Dighori.
Once operational, the Ashok Square rotary will include multiple entry and exit ramps, improving connectivity towards Nandanvan, Ganeshpeth Bus Stand, and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), while enabling smooth elevated traffic flow from Kamal Square towards Reshimbagh Square.
This is the city’s second elevated rotary after the one developed during the Pardi flyover project. However, with its Ashok Chakra-inspired design and the towering Ashoka Stambh, the Ashok Square rotary is set to emerge as one of Nagpur’s most recognisable infrastructure icons.
