Retail and wholesale medicine shops across the country are set to remain closed on Wednesday following a nationwide shutdown call by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists. The protest has been organised against the increasing business of online and internet pharmacies.
In Nagpur city and surrounding rural areas, more than 7,000 medical stores are expected to remain shut during the bandh. Authorities fear the closure could affect patient care and availability of medicines.Keeping the public inconvenience in mind, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has gone on alert and taken steps to ensure that some reputed pharmacies continue operating during the shutdown.
The Nagpur FDA convened an urgent meeting with office-bearers of the Chemists’ Association and appealed to them not to participate in the strike in the interest of the public. Additionally, district-level retail chemist associations were also requested to cooperate and maintain essential medicine services.
