The Transport Department has once again extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles. Earlier, December 31, 2025, had been announced as the final deadline for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019.
However, despite the expiry of that deadline, no major enforcement drives or penalties were imposed for nearly five months, and no official clarification regarding an extension was issued. On Tuesday, the department announced what it called a “final extension” till June 30, 2026, raising questions over the seriousness of enforcement efforts.
Authorities have now warned that legal action will begin from July 1, 2026, against vehicles operating without HSRP. However, the repeated extensions in the past have led many vehicle owners to believe that further relaxations may still be granted.Under the new order, enforcement squads will take action against both old and new vehicles without HSRP from July 1. Vehicle owners who have booked appointments for HSRP installation before June 30, 2026, will be exempt from action.
The department had already restricted several services for vehicles without HSRP, including transfer of ownership and hypothecation-related work. It has now expanded the restrictions to include services such as re-registration, vehicle modification approvals and licence renewals. Only fitness certificate renewals have been kept exempt from the new rules.
