More than 1,200 students from remote villages and underserved urban areas in Nagpur district will receive transport allowance or travel facilities during the 2026-27 academic year under the Maharashtra government’s school transport support scheme.
Introduced under the Right to Education framework, the scheme aims to help students who live far from schools. Financial assistance will be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
As per the government resolution, students from Classes 1 to 5 living more than one kilometre from a school, Classes 6 to 8 students residing beyond three kilometres, and Classes 9 and 10 students without a school within five kilometres will be eligible for transport support.In Nagpur district, students from rural talukas such as Bhiwapur, Hingna, Kamptee, Katol, Kuhi, Mouda, Narkhed, Ramtek and Umred will benefit from the scheme, along with several localities under Nagpur Municipal Corporation school clusters.
Officials said Kuhi, Ramtek, Hingna and Bhiwapur have a particularly high number of identified habitations where students travel long distances to attend school. In many cases, children currently travel between three and 10 kilometres daily.Urban beneficiaries have also been identified in areas such as Narsala, Hudkeshwar, Besa, Pardi, Manewada, Yashodhra Nagar, Kalamna and Uppalwadi.
Officials said the scheme is meant to support students living in areas where no nearby school is available within the prescribed distance limits for primary, upper primary and secondary education.
