With fuel prices turning into a major political and public issue due to the global energy crisis and rising tensions in West Asia, recent state-wise data has revealed a sharp contrast in petrol prices across India. Several BJP-ruled states, particularly in northern and western regions, are currently witnessing some of the lowest fuel rates in the country.
At the beginning of May, Gujarat emerged as one of the states offering the cheapest petrol, with prices hovering around Rs 94.3 per litre. The trend has largely been linked to comparatively lower Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed by the state government. Uttar Pradesh followed closely with petrol priced at nearly Rs 94.7 per litre, while Delhi and Haryana recorded rates of around Rs 94.8 and Rs 94.9 respectively.
Reacting to Gujarat’s comparatively lower fuel prices, a social media user praised the state administration, stating that despite Gujarat being a dry state with limited earnings from liquor sales, it has managed to maintain lower taxes on fuel, helping keep petrol prices among the lowest in India.
Apart from Gujarat, other BJP-governed states like Goa and Assam also reported relatively affordable fuel prices. Petrol in Goa was retailing at approximately Rs 96.5 per litre, while Assam recorded prices near Rs 97.1.
However, the data also reflects a different picture in some BJP-ruled states. Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh continue to remain in the higher fuel price bracket due to elevated VAT rates and additional cesses imposed by state authorities. Petrol prices in Maharashtra currently stand at around Rs 105.2 per litre, while Madhya Pradesh has recorded rates close to Rs 106.6.
Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh, governed by the TDP-led NDA alliance, remains among the states with the highest petrol prices in the country, with rates touching nearly Rs 113 per litre.
On the other hand, several southern states governed by Congress or INDIA bloc allies are also witnessing higher fuel costs. Petrol prices in Telangana are currently around Rs 110.9 per litre, while Kerala has recorded rates near Rs 107.5.
The figures underline how state-level tax structures continue to play a decisive role in determining fuel prices across India, leading to significant regional differences in petrol rates despite uniform base fuel costs.
