National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) excavation work near Ashok Chowk in Nagpur damaged a MSEDCL underground power cable on Monday afternoon, cutting electricity supply to 22,000 consumers for 20 minutes during the city’s brutal summer heat.
The incident occurred at around 4:15 pm when NHAI digging severed the 33 kV Anandam-Umred Road feeder underground cable originating from Mahapareshan’s 132 kV Besa Extra High Voltage substation. As a result, power supply to both the 33/11 kV Anandam and 33/11 kV Umred Road substations was disrupted.
Areas hit included Ayurvedic College campus, Reshimbag, Siraspeeth, Awari Chowk, Ganesh Nagar, Om Nagar, Anand Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Umred Road, Tulshbag and the Godrej Anandam complex.
With Nagpur already reeling under temperatures approaching 47 degrees Celsius, the sudden outage left residents, workers and students in sweltering conditions. MSEDCL teams responded immediately and restored supply within 20 minutes.
The incident again raises questions about coordination between NHAI and utility agencies during infrastructure work in densely populated city areas.
