Amid the ongoing heatwave across Vidarbha, a Senate member of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has urged the university administration to allot examination centres closer to students’ colleges to reduce travel difficulties during the harsh summer conditions.
In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, Senate member Manmohan Bajpai requested that students be assigned examination centres within a 2-km radius of their colleges. He cited the prevailing high temperatures and also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation while making the request.
Bajpai suggested that, wherever possible, students should either be allotted centres in their own colleges or nearby institutions, and centres located far away should be avoided. He also sought immediate intervention in cases where students have already been assigned distant centres for upcoming examinations.
Apart from the issue of travel, Bajpai also raised concerns regarding basic facilities at examination centres. He urged the university to ensure the availability of clean drinking water, working fans, hygienic washrooms, proper lighting arrangements, adequate desks and benches, and free parking facilities before finalising centre allotments.
According to him, several students have reportedly been allotted centres located far from their colleges despite closer options being available. Complaints regarding inadequate infrastructure and lack of basic amenities at certain examination venues have also been received.
“Providing relief to students from extreme heat and ensuring fuel conservation should be the university’s priority,” Bajpai said while urging the administration to take immediate corrective measures.
