Stepping up its demand for a separate Vidarbha state by 2027, the Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti (VRAS) on Wednesday announced a detailed agitation plan during its quarterly national meeting held in Nagpur.
The organisation outlined a series of protests, marches, and public outreach programmes aimed at reviving the long-pending statehood movement across the Vidarbha region.
One of the major announcements made during the meeting was a Kranti Din Long March scheduled for August 9. The march will begin from Deekshabhoomi and conclude at Samvidhan Chowk, where a public rally will also be organised. VRAS leaders said the programme is expected to mobilise large-scale public support for the separate statehood demand.
The organisation also announced another phase of protest between September 24 and 28, during which copies of the Nagpur Pact will be symbolically burnt across districts and talukas in Vidarbha. According to VRAS leaders, the move is intended to highlight what they called the continued neglect of the region and the failure to fulfil commitments made under the pact.
The state-level core committee meeting was held at MLA Hostel in Nagpur under the chairmanship of former MLA Wamanrao Chatap. District presidents, coordinators, and senior office-bearers from across the region attended the meeting. Metta Ramarao, national vice-president of the Federation for Creation of New States (Navrajya Nirman Mahasangh), was also present.
Apart from protest programmes, the organisation has also planned a public outreach campaign through Vidarbha Nirman Jansankalp Melavas to strengthen grassroots mobilisation. One such event is expected to be held at Sindkhed Raja in Buldhana district between July 15 and 20, while another major gathering is planned at Sewagram in Wardha district on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
During the discussions, members also referred to a recent NCRB report that reportedly ranked Nagpur among cities with high crime rates. Based on this, the organisation passed a resolution demanding immediate formation of a separate Vidarbha state, arguing that the region’s developmental and administrative concerns continue to remain neglected under the existing system.
