A new bus terminal with 10 additional platforms for rural bus services at the main Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus stand in Ganeshpeth, Nagpur, is now ready for operations. Work related to route display boards is currently in the final stage, and bus services from the new platforms are expected to commence by the end of this month.
Construction of the terminal for buses operating towards rural areas began in 2018. However, repeated delays prevented the project from being completed on time, causing inconvenience to passengers. Due to limited space at the Ganeshpeth bus stand, buses often had to be parked at unsuitable locations.
MSRTC had also initiated action against the contractor over delays in the construction work, though the same contractor was later entrusted with completing the project. After nearly seven years, the long-pending work has finally been completed.
MSRTC Nagpur deputy general manager Shrikant Gabhane said buses operating on routes such as Bhandara and Saoner will function from the new terminal. He added that all essential passenger amenities have been provided at the facility, and operations from the new platforms are likely to begin by month-end.
With the addition of the new section, the combined capacity of the old and new terminals at Ganeshpeth bus stand has now increased to 30 platforms. Officials believe the expanded capacity will not only reduce congestion at the bus stand but also make it easier to increase bus services in the future.
