The Maharashtra Secondary Education Department has officially announced that schools across the state, including Pune district, will reopen on June 15 for the 2026-27 academic session. As per the newly released academic calendar, the first term will continue till October 31, while Diwali vacations will be observed from November 2 to November 14. The second term will resume after the festive break and continue until May 1, 2027. Summer vacations will begin from May 3 and continue till June 14, 2027.
The new academic schedule brings a major change for the Vidarbha region, where schools traditionally reopened later due to extreme summer temperatures. This year, the state government has decided to implement a uniform reopening date of June 15 across Maharashtra. Officials said the move is aimed at maintaining consistency in the academic calendar and improving planning for schools and education authorities.
However, the revised reopening schedule has sparked concerns in Vidarbha, where temperatures in June often cross 42°C. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has sought a response from the state government regarding the decision to reopen schools from June 15 in the region. Petitioners have argued that the intense heat could pose health risks to students, especially children in rural areas who travel long distances to attend school.
To address heat-related concerns, the Education Department has proposed morning school timings in Vidarbha during the initial reopening period. According to officials, schools in the region may operate between 7 am and 11:45 am for the first few weeks after reopening. Authorities believe the revised timings will help students avoid exposure to peak afternoon heat while ensuring the smooth commencement of the new academic year.
