School Education Minister Pankaj Bhoyar has announced that all schools in Vidarbha will reopen from June 26, responding to prolonged heat conditions in the region. The decision overrides an earlier state-wide directive that had set June 15 as the reopening date.
The Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench had in 2007 directed that Vidarbha schools should not reopen before June 22 given the region’s extreme summer temperatures. Acting on that precedent, the Maharashtra Purrogami Primary Teachers Committee, through state president Prasad Patil, state secretary Hariidas Sasankar, and school education directorate officials, had submitted a memorandum to the School Education Minister, Secretary, and Director demanding a later reopening date. Some schools had also announced reopening from June 15 under the general state order.
Bhoyar said the decision to set June 26 as the uniform reopening date for all Vidarbha schools provides relief to students and families. Vidarbha recorded its highest-ever temperature in 2025, with Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bramhapuri, Akola, and Amravati districts crossing 45.8 degrees Celsius, after which the Education Directorate in Pune had ordered schools to open from June 23 that year.
